Chicken Scratch: Eat Hot Dogs, Not Chicken

Little Rhody is known for many "delicacies," from coffee milk and Del's Lemonade, to party pizza and clam cakes. All delicious. But one of my favorites is the hot wiener. Oh, sure, every state has hot dogs. But there's nothing like a Rhode Island hot wiener (even if we do call them NY System). They're not the healthiest meal, their scent lingers in the chicken coop for days and they give me wicked indigestion, but every bite is one hundred percent worth it. If you're making a wiener run, count me in! I'll take three, all the way.

HALLOWEENIES! Yup, you heard me right. Who says that hot dogs are just summer fare? Not me, give me all the brats, saugys, wieners, frankfurters and dawgs you got. Nothin’ says fall to me like mustard-colored sweaters, so why not let this inspire your plate as well?

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy one of these designer dogs:

Olneyville NY System Hot Wieners: Three all the way, of course! You won’t find another thing like it — an all-beef hot dog, steamed bun, meat sauce, chopped onions and that Polish mustard. You will not regret this staple.

You can even make them at home. Grab all the ingredients, including a packet of Olneyville Hot Wiener seasoning, at Dave's Fresh Marketplace and get cooking!

Crowd Pleaser

Spike's Junkyard Dogs

Spike's Junkyard Dogs: Man, what a menu. Want a Pizza Dog? They got it. Want a Chicago Dog? Got that too! You can even build your own like it's some sort of hot dog sundae buffet! It’s not, for the record. They’re just very hospitable people. You'll find Spike's in nearby Warwick.

Or you can branch out a little. Try a Corn Dog from Durk's Bar-B-Q or a Chili Dog from Harry's Bar & Burger or East Providence's Red Bridge Tavern. Providence G Pub has tons of toppings for their dogs too, including mac & cheese!

New Wave Wieners

Friskie Fries: Whether you visit the downtown Providence location or one of their food trucks, you'll find more than just fries on the menu. The Dirty Daug tops their classic fries with sliced NY System wieners, meat sauce, diced onion, mustard and celery salt. This puppy's a meal in itself, so make sure you leave some time for a quick nap after devouring this. Don’t get us wrong, there are plenty of places to enjoy a dog — but these guys spell frankfurter with a capital F.

Love the idea of a hot wiener/French fry combo? Try the Weenie Fries at Pizza Marvin or head to PB&Js in Warwick for their loaded tater tots. That delicious treat comes with hot wieners and all the fixings.

For more outside the box thinking, check out the Weiner Pizza at Cosmic Pizza in Warwick. And don't fight that early morning craving — Gel's Kitchen in West Warwick (and Gel's Kitchen 2 in nearby Warwick) has a Hot Weiner Omelet that's to die for.

The Classic

Baba's Original New York System: Located on historic Smith Hill in Providence, Baba's Original New York System serves up classic wieners "all the way." Stop by this location to get some original eats and neighborhood favorites that you won't find anywhere else.

Other downtown restaurants with hot wieners on the menu include Murphy's and Haven Bros. If you're venturing to East Providence, try EP Weiners or M&M New York System for your hot dog fix. Or head a little farther south to Roy Boy's Clam Shack in North Kingstown. Be sure to save some room for ice cream at the Frozen Cow next door.

You can even get a little fancy at Wally's Wieners in Newport. With nearly 20 different hot dogs on the menu, there's something for every taste, from the Fig and Mustard to the Mac Dog, which has all the trimmings of a certain favorite from the golden arches. Even better, they have 11 kinds of espresso martinis, including a giant version for sharing. Weenies and martinis? Yes, please!
