Chicken Scratch: Small Business Saturday

Season's greetings, friends! I'm here to let you know that there's no better way to Buy Local RI than doing your holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday. Skip the Black Friday craziness and support your favorite businesses! With gift card deals and sale prices at many local shops and attractions, you're sure to find unique gifts for everyone on your shopping list. And maybe a little something for your favorite Buy Local chicken (wink, wink).

Is it just me or do the Black Friday sales start earlier and earlier every year? And it seems like the deals aren't as great as they used to be. I won't be getting up at the crack of dawn (or heading out shopping at 2 a.m.) to fight the crowds over discount TVs or the hot new toy on Nov. 29. This year I'm planning to do my shopping locally on Small Business Saturday.

Visit the Buy Local RI page for local business listings around the state that are owned by your fellow Rhode Islanders. Shopping small means not only supporting the local economy, but also helping your friends and neighbors pay for their kids dance lessons or Little League fees.

In Providence, check out discounts on RI-themed shirts at The Landing or gift card deals from La Gondola and Providence Tour Company. Or treat your art loving friend to a discounted membership to the RISD Museum.

Looking for one-stop shopping? Head to the Crowne Plaza Warwick for Small Business Saturday Shop RI. Explore more than 150 vendors, including veteran, minority and disability-owned businesses. With everything from handmade jewelry and candles (don't miss Mr. C's Old Thyme Scents) to books and tasty treats, you're sure to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. You can even pick up a treat for your furry friend from Power Pup Treats.
